Geography: Morocco
Client: Tanger Med
Dates: May 2023 – October 2023
Technology: Hydrogen
Project Description
As part of its decarbonization strategy, the Tanger Med Port Authority seeks to reduce emissions from port operations by replacing diesel and fuel oil with green hydrogen. PIA was engaged by Tanger Med Engineering to assess the technical and economic feasibility of introducing hydrogen-powered port equipment.
The study quantified hydrogen demand across the port’s main activities -traction, towing, and non-electrified cranes – and evaluated infrastructure options for supply, including electrolysis, electricity sourcing, transport, and refueling logistics. Several configurations were compared to identify the most efficient setup for local production and distribution.
PIA defined a two-phase roadmap: the first involving the deployment of hydrogen refueling stations supplied by external producers, and the second adding on-site electrolysis to expand supply. The assignment also assessed regulatory conditions, competitiveness factors, and CO₂ reduction potential, and developed a pilot program to test hydrogen use in operational environments. The resulting roadmap supports Tanger Med’s ambition to integrate renewable hydrogen as a cornerstone of its low-carbon transition.
Key Takeaways
The study provided Tanger Med with a clear framework to integrate green hydrogen into its decarbonization strategy. It defined hydrogen demand, infrastructure options, and pilot design while evaluating cost competitiveness and carbon impact. The roadmap positions the port to progressively replace diesel equipment with renewable hydrogen solutions.
