The discussion raised a question about the impact and the consequences of developing heating networks?

🌡️ Heating: A Key Player in France’s Energy Transition! 🇫🇷

🔥 Heating is the largest source of energy consumption for French households, reaching a whopping 66% of their total energy use! When combined with Domestic Hot Water (DHW) needs, this figure jumps to 77%. Given the magnitude of these needs, finding renewable solutions is more critical than ever! 🌍💡

Nowadays most French households rely mainly on natural gas (41%), whereas other technologies such as electricity (41%), fuel oil (13%), heat networks (5%), and others (4%) play a smaller role. But did you know? 💸 In 2021 heating with natural gas costed an average of €908.72 per year per household, while electricity costed €1192.16, and fuel oil costed €1158.59. In comparison, households using heat networks only spent an average of €771.70 per year! 💪🔥

Heat networks are not just the most cost-effective option, they also offer unparalleled price stability compared to electricity or gas. And here’s the best part: Heat networks have the potential to drastically reduce GHG emissions in the heating sector. 🌱🌡️

Why? Because heat networks can be powered by renewable and recovered energy sources like biomass, waste-to-energy plants, and geothermal energy. As of 2021, these sources make up 62.6% of the energy mix in French heat networks —a share that has been steadily increasing since 2007! 🌿⚡

But let’s not forget—developing heat networks requires significant investment. The average project costs around €670 per linear meter, with costs heavily influenced by pipe diameter and heating density. 🏗️📈

Moreover, the amount of energy delivered plays a crucial role in cost efficiency. Networks delivering more than 1,000 MWh per point of delivery enjoy around one-third lower selling prices than those delivering less than 250 MWh. This highlights the importance of connecting high-consumption sites to heat networks and optimizing distance and density for financial viability. 🏘️🏢

Heat networks can also complement other emerging renewable sectors like biogas and hydrogen—used either directly or through cogeneration. Given their vast economic and environmental benefits, the French government has prioritized their development. 🎯

In the Pluriannual Energy Program (PPE), the goal is to multiply renewable heat and cold networks by 2.2 by 2028 compared to 2017. To achieve this, several supportive policies have been adopted, such as the “Fonds Chaleur” (Heat Fund) managed by ADEME. This fund aims to finance projects for heat production from renewable energies and energy recovery, while promoting investment and job creation in the sector. 💼💰

Additional policies include a reduced 5.5% VAT for heat networks that use over 50% renewable and recovered energy sources. Recent legislation also mandates connections to urban heat networks in certain cases, further boosting their development and financial viability. 🏙️
